Curry powders are recommended for stews, soups, vegetables, eggs, meats, and anything curry-based.

What is Curry Powder?

Curry powder, despite its common use, remains a mystery to many.  Essentially, it’s a blend of spices originating from British attempts to simplify Indian cuisine.

Unlike other spice mixes with specific names, curry powder encompasses a variety of spices, typically including those found in garam masala along with additions.

Curry powder tends to be milder than garam masala and often contains starch as a thickener.  While it may contain various spices, the dominant ingredients are usually fenugreek seeds and turmeric

Curry powder serves as the most versatile option in the Kenyan kitchen, useful when specific spices are unavailable or unnecessary. Its composition varies widely, with common ingredients including cumin, coriander, turmeric, and chili.

Unlike garam masala,  which is reserved for specific Indian dishes requiring intense flavor, curry powder is more of a catch-all seasoning suitable for various cuisines and dishes.

Additionally, the ingredients and flavors of curry powder can differ depending on regional preferences.

Below are the top 3 brands that I recommend, these are all honest personal opinions no brand had any input in the writing of this.

3. Nature’s Own

2. Tropical Heat

1.  Simba Mbili

3. Nature’s Own

Nature’s Own brand of curry powder may not break the bank, but it doesn’t claim the crown for top quality either.

Priced as the most budget-friendly option, it offers a decent blend of flavors that generally suffice for everyday cooking.

Its ingredient list includes a mix of Coriander, Cumin, Fennel, Bay Leaves, Mustard, Black Pepper, Cloves, Ginger, Red Chilli, Turmeric, Cinnamon, Green Cardamom, and  Curry Leaves.

While it may lack the complexity and depth found in pricier alternatives, Nature’s Own curry powder still delivers a satisfactory taste profile for various dishes. It’s a versatile option that can add a touch of warmth and spice to your cooking for much less.

2. Tropical Heat

Tropical Heat Curry Powder

Ingredients: Coriander, Rice, Cumin, Turmeric, Mustard, Fenugreek, Cinnamon, Jaggery, Garlic Salt, Ginger, Citric, BayLeaves, Chillies

The best option if you want the most aromatic powder that gives the most intense bright orange-yellow color, but flavorwise not the top of the line.

It doesn’t contain any additives including MSG, it is just 100% natural, it is also suitable for vegetarians, but contains mustard as an allergen.

Furthermore, Tropical Heat diversifies its offerings by producing snacks like crisps and peanuts. However, it’s important to note that the curry powder is processed in a facility that handles potential allergens such as peanuts, sesame seeds, milk, and soy.

As a precaution, individuals with severe allergic reactions to these substances may want to avoid  Tropical Heat curry powder, as cross-contamination is possible

It’s worth noting that the company has provided a disclaimer regarding this potential risk, absolving themselves of legal liability.

1. Virani Simba Mbili

Ingredients: Coriander Seed, Turmeric, Mustard Seeds, Chillies, Salt, Ginger, Jaggery, Fennel Seed, Fenugreek Seed, Cumin Seed, Cinnamon, Garlic

Simba Mbili curry powder is widely regarded as the best in Kenya, leaving no room for debate.

It remains an iconic staple, true to its origins and steadfastly unaltered since its inception, still packaged in the same metal tins reminiscent of the 1960s.

Simba Mbili, in existence since 1957, has earned its place as a household name with its enduring tagline: “a must in every kitchen,” a sentiment echoed by its widespread presence in nearly half of Kenyan households.

Similar to Tropical Heat,  Simba Mbili spices boast authenticity and purity, devoid of any artificial colors, flavors, or preservatives.

Recommended applications for  Simba Mbili curry powder include:

  •  Enhancing the flavor of soups and stews.
  •  Adding depth to all types of curries, whether meat, fish, or vegetable-based (with a suggested ratio of two teaspoonfuls per half a kilo of ingredients).
  •  Serving as a marinade for roast meats and nyama choma.
  •  Elevating marinades and sauces with its spicy flavor profile.
  •  Providing a zesty kick to salads.

Available in sizes ranging from 10g sachets to 500g containers,  Simba Mbili curry powder offers versatility and quality for culinary enthusiasts across Kenya.

Simba Mbili curry powder is my top recommended option in Kenya and East Africa
