Naivas, Carrefour & Quickmart Cakes Ranked

All major supermarkets have bakery sections these days, Naivas, Carrefour, and Quickmart, which one is the best overall, and which ones are good for a specific pastry or cake type? Especially birthday cakes?  We will find out that in this post.

Supermarkets have okay cakes…  but if you want more; try these bakeries such as Valentine 200 and Mystic Bakers….they have the best cakes you will ever taste locally.

Also, coffee shops like Artcafe, Java House and restaurants like CJs have very good cakes but they go for 450 a slice. supermarket cakes are however accessible and conveniently located near us, so they are a good option.

What defines a good cake?

Moisture, Moisture, Moisture – the absence of which can make a cake painfully dry. Minimal crumb – a well-moisturized cake holds together with minimal crumbling. A reliable test for moisture is gently pressing the cake’s top; if it springs back, it suggests adequate moisture.

Opting for buttercream frosting, especially Italian buttercream, over whipped cream contributes to a better cake experience.

Balanced sweetness – not overly sugary but still sufficiently sweet. The cake-to-icing ratio should be just right.

Balanced flavors – a harmonious blend of flavors that is rich but not overpowering.

Aesthetic appeal – visually appealing cakes captivate attention and evoke anticipation, showcasing the craftsmanship and attention to detail. The texture should be light and fluffy, avoiding density and compactness.

3. Carrefour

Let me start by expressing love for Carrefour, but unfortunately, my affection doesn’t extend to their bakery section; it ends with ordinary groceries.

Disappointingly, most of their breads (including hotdog and, burger buns) and pastries are dry, leaving much to be desired.

I distinctly recall encountering a baguette that was so dry it resembled sugarcane, ( and it was baked that very day), and garlic bread which was the driest piece of food to ever try (this is not satire).

As for their black forest cakes, the tastelessness left a lot to be desired. The cream seemed to be straight out of a packet, and the cake itself was dreadfully dry.

Needless to say, I have nothing good to say about them and won’t be trying Carrefour’s bakery section anytime soon.

2. Naivas

In contrast, Naivas pleasantly surprised me with their muffins. If you have been avoiding muffins, cupcakes, and queen cakes due to their dryness,n Naivas’ muffins, were a game-changer.

Moist, flavorful, and satisfying, they quickly became my go-to option whenever I needed really good muffins.

1. Quickmart

Now, if there’s one supermarket bakery that truly stands out, it’s  Quickmart. Their creamy cakes and decadent desserts are in a league of their own.

The banana bread is my go-to for, creamy cakes boasting real cream and a melt-in-your-mouth moistness that’s simply irresistible.

And let’s not forget their cheesecake, priced at a  reasonable 200 Bob a slice, (you’ll get the same at double in cafes)

Additionally, I was pleasantly surprised by their amazing doughnuts, although I quickly learned that it’s best to grab them from a busy branch to ensure they’re not too hard.

Bread however is another story, their instore brand
