This post is a review of the Mars chocolate bar, and according to Mars Inc. It is A Delicious Fusion of Chocolate, Caramel and Nougat
The Mars Bar – a chocolate that’s been around forever( since 1932) and still holds its place on the shelves.
Upon unwrapping it does look familiar to Milky Way and Snickers. The Mars wrapper doesn’t have a drawing of the bar cross section so if it is your first time you don’t know what to expect layerwise until you take a bite
If you’ve ever tried a Milky Way, you already know what to expect because the two are practically almost the same, with some slight flavor and texture tweaks. And if you’re thinking of a Snickers, well, imagine it without the nuts, and you’re on the right track.
First Impressions: Taste and Texture
The first bite is a flood of sweet, soft, and gooey goodness. The Mars Bar comprises 40% milk chocolate, 32% soft nougat, and 27% caramel.
That’s a whole lot of smoothness packed into one bar. For caramel lovers, this might be paradise; for those who like their candy bars to have a bit more variety, it might be a letdown.
The gooey texture can feel a little one-dimensional, especially if you’re used to candy bars that offer more layers of texture like Snickers or Twix. The caramel dominates the flavor profile, and while that’s great for some, it can be overwhelming for others, especially if caramel isn’t your thing.
The soft nougat adds to the chewy consistency, making the bar feel like it’s all merging together without any contrast. The chocolate itself is smooth and familiar – similar to what you’d find on a Snickers or Twix, but without the additions that make those bars a bit more exciting.
Who is Mars Bar For?
If you don’t like peanuts or are allergic to them, the Mars Bar might be your safe haven when everyone else is reaching for a Snickers. It’s nut-free, so there’s no crunch, and that’s a good thing if you’re just looking for a simple, caramel-nougat combo. For those who enjoy a bit of bite, though, it might feel like something is missing. The lack of texture can make it feel overly soft and sticky, which I personally don’t like.
Let’s be honest: Mars Bars can be a bit on the sweet side. They’re rich enough that one bar might be all you need for a while. For some, that’s perfect; for others, it might be too much, leaving you wishing for a glass of water or a contrasting snack to break up the sweetness.
A Quick Hack: Chill It
Here’s a pro tip: pop your Mars Bar in the fridge for a bit. This simple move changes the game. When chilled, the caramel firms up and the nougat becomes a bit chewier, making the overall texture more enjoyable. It adds just a hint of resistance when you bite in, which can be nice if you find the regular texture too soft(which most people definitely do).
In fact, I’d go so far as to say that a cold Mars Bar is almost a different candy. It doesn’t quite become crunchy, but the change in texture makes it feel more complex. Plus, it’s a lot less sticky when it’s chilled, which is a win if you’re not a fan of having caramel cling to your teeth.
Comparison to Other Bars
When comparing a Mars Bar to its relatives, the differences are all about texture and extras. A Snickers has that satisfying crunch thanks to the peanuts, which breaks up the caramel and nougat and makes for a more interesting bite.
A Twix throws in a crispy biscuit layer that adds a whole new dimension. But the Mars Bar? It’s just smooth and sweet, which can feel repetitive.
The chocolate on a Mars Bar is the same smooth coating you’ll find on other Mars Inc. products. So, if you’re a fan of their chocolate, you’ll probably appreciate it here.
But for those who prefer more diverse elements in their candy, the Mars Bar might not be as exciting -enjoyable if you’re in the mood for it, but not the most memorable.
Final Thoughts
The Mars Bar is undeniably a classic, and for good reason: It’s sweet, and it hits the spot when you’re craving a straightforward caramel and nougat treat. But it’s not without its downsides. The lack of texture can make it feel a bit too soft and gooey, and the sweetness can be overwhelming for some.
Still, it’s worth trying, especially if you’ve never had one before. And if you have a few in your candy drawer, consider tossing one in the fridge for a bit. A chilled Mars Bar might surprise you and make it feel like a treat worth having. For those who love caramel and prefer their chocolate bars to be nut-free and smooth, this might be just what you’re looking for. But if you’re all about contrast, crunch, or a mix of textures, you might find yourself reaching for a Snickers or Twix instead.
