EZO Restaurant Nairobi Menu, Pricing & Photos

EZO is a newly opened restaurant in Nairobi’s Westlands that specializes in Neo-Japanese cuisine and boasts a Michelin Star chef. This post will provide an overview of the menu options, prices, budget considerations, and the overall atmosphere of the restaurant, giving you all the essential information you need before visiting.

Neo-Japanese cuisine typically follows traditional Japanese culinary methods but presents them in a modern way.

EZO is the first restaurant in Nairobi to feature a Michelin Star chef. While a Michelin star is highly prestigious in the culinary world, it doesn’t mean the restaurant itself has a Michelin star. As of now, there are no Michelin-starred restaurants in Nairobi, or anywhere in Africa or Australia.

Budget

This is undeniably an upscale restaurant, evidenced by the presence of a Michelin-star chef. It’s not a place where the average Kenyan would casually dine; expect to spend over KSh 5,000 here. Of course, if money isn’t an issue for you, then good for you!

For most of us, experiencing this restaurant in full will require some saving up, especially for special occasions like birthdays, high-end business dinners, and romantic dates.

There is no spending limit at this restaurant, so while it can get pricey, you can choose a dish or two and comfortably spend less than KSh 3,500. It is manageable and allows for a flexible dining experience within your budget.

When it comes to value, let’s face it: high-end restaurants don’t offer much in terms of value. The terms “fancy” and “value” just don’t go together. You’ll likely spend a lot of money for small portions, but in terms of taste, it often justifies the expense—even if the portion size doesn’t.

More details on the menu and prices will be covered later in this post.

Location & Hours

As mentioned before, EZO is located in Westlands, specifically at 42 Muthithi Road, Nairobi, on the second floor of Stellato Mall.

Their operating hours are from 2 PM to midnight from Monday to Friday, and they open two hours earlier on weekends, from noon to midnight.

These extended hours are a great feature, especially since they stay open later into the night. Many Nairobi restaurants tend to close early, which can be disappointing. For example, Mambo Italia closes at 8 PM—yes, you read that right!

Ambiance

The ambiance of the restaurant is modern and classy, yet simple and minimalist. It is beautifully well-lit, with everything looking upscale. The theme features brown accents contrasting nicely with the creamy interior.

At the end of the restaurant, there’s a bar section. The ceiling has elegant touches and chandeliers, adding to the sophisticated atmosphere. This is an Instagram-worthy place without being excessive.

The service is exceptional, as you would expect from a high-end restaurant. They even change your utensils with every set of the meal, which adds a sophisticated touch to the dining experience.

Pricing

The lowest price on the menu is KSh 700, while the highest is KSh 4,500, which, as you might guess, is for a steak—specifically a ribeye. This might seem reasonable, but the small portions mean you won’t just order the KSh 700 porridge alone. You’ll likely order in courses: starting with an appetizer, then a main course, perhaps a drink, and finishing with a dessert.

Appetizers average around KSh 1,500, mains around KSh 2,500, and desserts another KSh 1,500, bringing the total to about KSh 6,500 without drinks. For the full experience, expect to spend about KSh 7,000 per person. If it’s a date, budget around KSh 15,000.

In addition to the regular menu, they offer slightly discounted course meals. However, these come with a catch—they are time-limited, available only on weekdays from Monday to Friday between 2 to 5 pm as part of a lunch menu. You get four meals at a lower price than in the evening. The three-hour window for this lunch offer is quite generous.

Set 1 (KSh 1,900)

  • Spicy Glass Noodles: Transparent noodles served with leeks, miso mayo, and celery.
  • Miso Soup: A traditional Japanese soup made with tofu, wakame seaweed, and enoki mushrooms.

  • Marinated Tomatoes Cold Soup: A chilled soup featuring marinated tomatoes and vegetables.
  • Eggplant with Spinach Oolong Sauce: Eggplant served with a flavorful spinach oolong tea-based sauce.

As you can see, ordering all four sets for lunch will cost you KSh 8,000, which is supposedly discounted compared to ordering the same items outside the lunch hour menu.

The downside of these menu sets is that they are pre-determined, giving you limited options and essentially serving you the restaurant’s best-sellers or most popular dishes.

How about selecting items individually from the menu? Below is EZO’s menu with prices for each item from different categories.

Thoughts?

The restaurant is upscale and leans towards the fancier side, making it ideal for special occasions. It’s more about the dining experience and savoring the flavors rather than getting full, as the portions are designed for sampling. The restaurant boasts a Michelin-star chef, the only one in Nairobi, adding to its prestige.

Given its status as a nice restaurant, making a reservation is important since tables are limited. You can also pre-order mains to reduce wait time. This is one of the nicer Japanese restaurants in Nairobi, for that high-end culinary experience.

I imagine of myself as a “professional food reviewer”. (I know, its amazing being this delusional) you may be wondering what the prerequisites are, and that would be; being dropped on your head as a child, it takes zero skills or talent to be me.
