This kid-friendly recipe can be made with minimal or no adult supervision. With unlimited options for toppings, it is highly customizable to your liking. It is so popular, especially among Millennials and even become a meme sensation
Avocado toast is prepared by toasting bread, skinning avocado, slicing it, laying slices on toast, and seasoning with salt and pepper, a drizzle of fresh lemon lime juice
Ingredients & Procedure
- 2 Thick slices of bread (toasted); thick bread holds the weight of avocado and toppings effortlessly and doesn’t get soggy from overripe avocados. Toasting adds the extra crunch-enhancing texture. It is also easy to spread the avocado as it is more firm and rigid. Bread choice is crucial, go with wholegrain as a healthy choice, sourdough for flavor, or rye bread. Choosing bread is mostly based on dietary needs.
- 1 ripe avocado For avocado choice go with what is in season or available. Just make sure your avocado is ripe enough to be mashed and spread. Skin the avocado, remove the pit, slice it into halves then quarters. You can either add avocado slices on toast or mash them and add them on toast. If you go with slicing, make sure the slices are thin to provide enough surface for seasoning. If mashing, don’t mash on toast as this might disintegrate it. Spread your avocado generously and evenly.
- 1Tsp juice of one lemon, lime, or vinegar Both provide an acidic environment to prevent oxidation of avocado. Lemon contains citric acid while vinegar contains acetic acid. They also provide extra tanginess to our avocado toast. You are free to use either as they both serve the same purpose. Avocado turns brown on exposure to air due to enzymes present in it that react with oxygen. The acidity slows or inhibits this process making your avocado toast look still bright and appetizing!
- 1/2 Tsp Extra virgin olive oil This is optional but a great choice if you want the olive oil flavor. It also adds extra healthy fats to your toast. Just a small even drizzle on the avocado mash will do it
- Salt Use a high-quality salt with flaky larger crystals. Skip table salt, use sea or kosher salts for extra texture. Coarser salts are less salty and more pure compared to table salt. Table salts are iodized and have a metallic taste and contain additives. Use garlic salt for flavor enhancement if you have it. Salt can be overpowering on avocado so don’t go too crazy.
- Pepper: Use freshly cracked peppercorns. Ground black pepper works too but freshly cracked has more flavor and texture thus more recommended
- Optional Toppings; Chili Flakes, sliced tomatoes, almonds, eggs, bacon, smoked salmon, and cheese
